How to deal with disaster fatigue amid earthquakes, tropical cyclones
As parts of the country continue to experience consecutive typhoons and earthquakes, some Filipinos are reporting what experts describe as “disaster fatigue.”
According to an Unang Balita report, the Philippine Psychological Association, frequent changes in daily routines, such as sleep and eating patterns, contribute to mounting stress. People also deal with feelings of uncertainty and fear, worried that another typhoon or earthquake could strike at any moment.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) added that many individuals are experiencing heightened stress, anxiety, and trauma due to repeated natural disasters.
Mental health experts recommend focusing on aspects of life that individuals can control, such as emergency preparedness and readiness measures, to help cope with these feelings.
Preparing and planning for potential disasters can give people a sense of agency amid uncertainty, according to experts, emphasizing the importance of practical steps alongside emotional support. –Sherylin Untalan/NB, GMA Integrated News
