DOST-FPRDI installs 1st bamboo waiting shed in Laoag City

LAOAG CITY, ILOCOS NORTE – The Department of Science and Technology’s Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) on Wednesday installed its first bamboo waiting shed in front of the Laoag Central Elementary School here.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said the bamboo waiting shed is a “symbol of climate resilience” for communities.

“Bamboo is a perfect example of the future we want to build – sustainable. It is fast-growing, renewable, and deeply rooted in our culture,” Solidum said.

DOST-FPRDI director and bamboo expert Rico Cabangon said the bamboo waiting shed was developed using an octagonal bamboo jointing system made of steel. It can withstand approximately 1.7 tons of load.

The structure is equipped with solar-powered lights and has a charging station.

Cabangon said the bamboo structure costs about P150,000 to build and has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. He added that its lifespan can be extended with proper maintenance.

The bamboo waiting shed also has a roofing system which protects the structure from heat and rain.

“This structure is more than just a shelter. It’s a living demonstration of how science, art, and sustainability can come together to create practical and appealing public infrastructure,” Cabangon said.

Laoag City Mayor James Bryan Alcid said the Laoag City local government unit (LGU) would be in charge of the maintenance of the bamboo waiting shed.

He also expressed hope that the bamboo waiting shed would be spared from vandalism and other destruction as it is located in one of the city’s busiest intersections and near the Laoag City police post. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
