PHIVOLCS observes minor phreatomagmatic eruption at Taal Volcano

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded a minor phreatomagmatic eruption on Friday afternoon.

In an advisory, PHIVOLCS said that the eruption occurred at the Taal main crater at 4:36 p.m.

Records from the agency showed that the eruption consisted of four pulses lasting two minutes.

“The event generated short and dark jets of ash that collapsed onto the Main Crater Lake and light gray to whitish plumes that rose 600 meters above the crater before drifting southwest,” the advisory read.

Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, which indicates low-level unrest.

Earlier in December, PhilVolcs had recorded two minor phreatic eruptions generating plumes rising 1200 meters above the crater. —Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
