PhilSA, partners ink deal for rocket dev't, test rocket launch in PH
The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with several government agencies and private partners for a framework on rocket development training and experimental rocket launches in the country.
“These initiatives will demonstrate the viability of the establishment and operation of a Philippine spaceport, with the goal of positioning the country as a gateway to space in the region,” PhilSA said in a statement on Thursday.
“With the Pacific Ocean to its east and its proximity to the equator, the Philippines is well positioned to ensure safe and secure rocket launch and recovery operations over open waters, helping to reduce costs, improve launch efficiency, and create opportunities for research and commercial space activities,” it added.
PhilSA said the deal expands on a rocket technology training program its engineers completed in South Korea with Perigee Aerospace from October to November 2025.
The program offered both lectures and practical experience in launch vehicle systems, covering rocket assembly and testing.
“Through training, international collaboration, and private sector participation, PhilSA and its partners continue to strengthen the Philippines’ capabilities in space research, engineering, and rocket and satellite development,” PhilSA said.
It added that the initiative sets the stage for future projects, including local assembly, testing, and potential rocket launches in the Philippines.
“With its strategic location, expanding technical workforce, and commitment to cooperative development, the Philippines is well positioned to become a strategic, safe, and sustainable gateway to space for the region and the world,” PhilSA added.
The signing ceremony was held on Wednesday during the Philippines-Korea Business Forum at Conrad Manila.
Signatories include PhilSA Ad Interim Director General Gay Jane Perez; Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda; Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) Administrator and CEO Katrina Ponce Enrile; Perigee Aerospace CEO Dong Yoon Shin; and Ascend International Gateway, Inc. President Ramon Garcia Jr.
“The MOU and its collaboration for rocket development and experimental launches are pivotal steps towards establishing a Philippine spaceport and advancing the countries’ space industry,” PhilSA said. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
