Acer and Lenovo are planning to launch quad-core tablet computers running Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest flavor of Google’s operating system for mobile devices.
Tech site DigiTimes cited sources who said the new devices are to be launched in the first quarter of 2012 to compete against Samsung and Asustek’s Eee Pad Transformer Prime.
But DigiTimes said its sources also noted competition over the quad-core tablet PCs will be difficult as these quad-core devices will only see improvements over their performance and design, but will still feature the same concept as their dual-core predecessors.
It said Acer and Lenovo’s quad-core tablet PCs will have Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processor, which also powers Asustek’s latest Eee Pad Transformer Prime.
Also, DigiTimes’ sources said that while these players’ performance in the dual-core tablet PC field were not as good as expected, they will continue to advance and launch new quad-core devices to defend their brands.
The new quad-core tablet PCs from Acer and Lenovo are likely to be priced between US$459-599, DigiTimes said.
But DigiTimes also noted that since non-Apple players’ machines have no advantage to compete against Amazon or Apple’s tablet devices, the sources believe non-Apple players will account for only 10 to 15 percent of the total tablet PC market. — TJD, GMA News
