More 'creative' hacks to come in 2012

Cybercriminals will become more creative, hackers will seek non-traditional targets, and more high-profile data loss incidents via malware and hacking may occur in 2012.
 
These are among the 12 security predictions for 2012 by computer security firm Trend Micro, which said the predictions come under four categories:
  • Big IT trends
  • Mobile landscape
  • Threat landscape
  • Data leaks and breaches
 
"Our hope that new OSs make the world a safer place didn’t work out. This means that our customers in 2012 will need to continue moving toward a more data-centric model for effective security and privacy as they embrace consumerization, virtualization, and the cloud. And we here at Trend Micro need to continue our work in these key areas to help enable our customers to meet and protect against these threat trends in 2012," said Trend Micro chief technology officer Raimund Genes.
 
Under Big IT Trends, Trend Micro noted two predictions:
 
  1. Security and data breach incidents in 2012 will force organizations to make BYOD (Bring Your Own Devices)-related challenges.
  2. The real challenge for data center owners will be dealing with the increasing complexities of securing physical, virtual, and cloud-based systems.
Under Mobile Landscape:
  1. Smartphone and tablet platforms, especially Google's Android, may suffer from more cybercriminal attacks.
  2. Security vulnerabilities may be found in legitimate mobile apps, making it easier for cybercriminals to extract sensitive data.
Under Threat Landscape:
  1. Botnets may become smaller but will be more manageable and grow in number, and make takedowns by law enforcers more difficult.
  2. Hackers will seek non-traditional targets such as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, with the targets ranging from SCADA-controlled industrial machinerty to medical gadgets.
  3.  Cybercriminals will find more creative ways to hide from law enforcements. One way is to abuse legitimate online revenue sources like online advertising.
  4. Data leaks and breaches
  5. More hacker groups will pose a bigger threat to organizations that protect highly sensitive data.
  6. The new social networking generation will redefine "privacy," with the younger social networkers more likely to reveal personal data to other parties - like social networking sites.
  7. Small and medium businesses may become easy targets as social engineering becomes mainstream.
  8. New threats will use sophisticated cybercrime tools.
  9. More high-profile data loss incidents via malware infection and hacking will occur in 2012.
