'Digital eyeglasses' for progressive lens users

Middle-aged people whose eye condition forces them to use progressive lenses may finally get some much-needed help with new electronic-focusing eyewear.

Makers of the $1,200 emPower! eyewear claim to use a layer of liquid crystals to create a near-focus zone with a toggle of a switch.

"The lenses for emPower eyewear feature virtually invisible layers of liquid crystals that instantly adjust and provide a near-focus zone whenever you need it," it said.

An article on PC World said the new gadget could be a boon to those using progressive lenses that are divided into three sections: the top for long-distance vision, the middle is for middle-distance work, like on a computer screen, and the bottom for looking at objects close up.

It said such an arrangement can also be a problem, since when the wearer looks down at the ground, it may look fuzzy or distorted "because you're using the bottom portion of the glasses designed for close vision to view something 5 or 6 feet away."

PC World said a single charge of the glasses lasts two to three days.

The glasses are initially available at about 1,500 optometrists around the country, but can set a buyer back by about $1,200, including frames and protective coatings. — TJD, GMA News
