Legit music downloads for just P20 at MyMusic Store Philippines

Downloading music just got local and legit.

MyMusic Store Philippines launched their website last January 18 at Robot Restaurant Makati, touted as the first online digital music store in the country. Music lovers can now download their favorite international and OPM songs for their digital players. Their website, MyMusicStore.com.ph, has over 116,000 songs from 12 of the biggest record companies here and abroad. They are also supported by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI).

"Currently, people download pirated, torrents. They don't have a choice for legitimate downloads. So now they have a choice," said MyMusic Store's Jhanice Reodique.

To get international recording companies to support MyMusic Store is impressive, but getting the local recording industry on board is one true feat. Piracy, after all, didn't just cripple foreign artists; local artists felt it too, if not more. And for the MyMusic Store launch, no less than the legends of OPM were around to show their support.

"It's a way to support OPM. Music is our soul. We gotta pump some money into this," said Bamboo Mañalac.

Fair price

Determining the price range was a collaboration between MyMusic Store and the labels themselves. Most OPM songs are priced 20, 25 to 30 pesos. In the website, Slapshock's "Ngayon Na" is priced at 25 pesos, Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" and Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera's "Moves Like Jagger" are priced at 35 pesos, while Rihanna's "We Found Love" and Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away" are priced at 30 pesos.

MyMusic Store is also working on offering varying payment options for all kinds of consumers.

"We have mobile payment via Smart. But eventually, we will be offering a MyMusic Store wallet wherein you can purchase credits via LoadCentral using e-pins. You can also use Paypal or your credit card," explained Reodique.

Not just background music

It takes a lot of trust in the market to launch a website where people can purchase songs that can easily be found online for free. But the presence of Bambo Mañalac, Ely Buendia, Gary Valenciano and Optical Media Board (OMB) Chairman Ronnie Rickets shows the industry's faith in Filipino music lovers.

"I think it's a great thing. It's due time finally. I myself am not innocent of downloading; I've done it myself. But I learn from this from personal experience. When you start downloading stuff, things lose value. You download 500 albums and then you can go through the whole 500 things. I just feel that when you personally buy something you really like, you research and you go for it, there's value in that and you really listen to it. It's not just background music," shared Mañalac.

When asked if MyMusic Store can this be a venue for Bamboo to release its exclusive tracks, Mañalac said:

"I'm welcome to that. All they have to do is give me a call."

Coming soon to Android

Aside from the musical luminaries, Samsung Philippines was also present to sponsor the event.

"Samsung supports anti-piracy. We're also in the works of doing the Android application," said Odette Velarde of Samsung Corporate Marketing.

Soon enough, Filipino Android users can download legitimate content not just from their computers, but from their Android-run mobile phones and tablets as well. — TJD, GMA News
