Microsoft and Linux fanboys who want to see a desktop version of the Windows operating system running on a modern-day smartphone may want to try this.
A developer has posted a method to let the venerable Windows 95 and Linux OSes run on an HTC EVO 3D smartphone in a relatively easy and quick process.
"Basically, all a user needs to do is download the required software, modify a file or two and run the apk. Wait for it to boot and you’re ready to go," read a post on the XDA Developers site.
XDA senior member "mnomaanw" indicated the method will also work for Windows 98, Windows XP and Linux.
The full instructions were posted on another page in the forum.
According to the XDA Developers site, the controls are easy to understand:
- It emulates the touchpad on the touchscreen, and left/right mouse buttons on volume
- A user can click the touch screen to generate a left-mouse click altough this does not work every time
- Back generates a BackSpace, Menu generates Enter, left-upper corner click generates TAB
- A left-lower corner click pops up the keyboard
However, the site also advised users to take the proper precautions, such as backing up their data.
The 17-year-old Windows 95 is Microsoft's first 32-bit OS for desktop computers. It requires at least 4 MB memory and 35 to 40 MB of disk space.
In contrast, the one-year-old HTC EVO 3D has more than enough memory and disk space for Windows 95: 1 GB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory. — TJD, GMA News
