Gamers warned vs 'XBox Code Generator' scam

Gamers, be warned: a supposed code generator software for Microsoft's Xbox game console is making the rounds on the Internet, offering freebies for the Xbox platform.

Computer security firm GFI said the supposed code generator will ultimately lead to another scam featuring a survey and possibly a ringtone service.

In a blog post, GFI said the code generator program offers supposed freebies that include one month of Xbox Live and up to 4000 free Microsoft points.

A video posted on YouTube even depicts the code generator booting up, the user selecting a target and hitting the "Generate Code" button.

After a while, a “Hooray, it worked” type message appears and the person in the video is presented with a code.

The person then cuts and pastes the code into the Microsoft “Redeem points code” website and gets 1600 free Microsoft points.

But once the user downloads the file, he or she gets a message that the program requires the latest version of Microsoft .Net.

Once the user downloads Microsoft .Net and finally activates the code generator, he or she then sees a message claiming he program has become “severely overused,” and the user will need a password to “stop the leechers.”

Clicking on the "Get Password" link leads to a survey where the scammers get commissions for each survey filled.

In some cases, GFI said the user is prompted to download the program again - and is presented with a second survey.

"Is it worth downloading this program, filling in some of those offers and trying it out? Absolutely not," GFI said. — TJD, GMA News
