Google Wave now read-only, shuts down April 30
Search giant Google on Thursday reminded users of its shuttered Google Wave project they have until April 30 to retrieve their data before the service fully shuts down.
In an email to Google Wave users, the Wave team said Google Wave is now in read-only mode, with the service to be turned off at the end of April.
“Google Wave is now in read-only mode. This is a reminder that the Wave service will be turned off on April 30, 2012. You will be able to continue exporting individual waves using the existing PDF export feature until the Google Wave service is turned off. We encourage you to export any important data before April 30, 2012,” the team said.
Last November, Google announced its Google Wave project would no longer be developed as a separate product.
It specified the dates for ending this maintenance period and shutting down Wave.
On the other hand, Google said those who still want to use Wave can avail of a number of open-source projects, including Apache Wave.
“There is also an open source project called Walkaround that includes an experimental feature that lets you import all your Waves from Google. This feature will also work until the Wave service is turned off on April 30, 2012,” it said. — TJD, GMA News
