PHL pushes ASEAN partnership vs online porn, prostitution

Philippine officials pushed over the weekend for a stronger regional-level partnership among Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members against online pornography and prostitution.

The Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development cited the need for a holistic approach in addressing the problem at a three-day conference in Manila last June 19 to 21.

“We all have crucial roles to play to save the lives of vulnerable children and women, who are often the victims of such kind of exploitation,” DSWD Undersecretary Parisya Taradji said at the recent ASEAN Conference on Working Toward a Cyber Pornography and Cyber Prostitution Free Southeast Asia in Manila.

Excerpts of the address were posted on the DSWD website June 29.

The three-day conference aimed to let ASEAN member states address gaps and ensure responsive programs and interventions for victims of online pornography and prostitution.

At the meeting, the DSWD said cyber pornography and cyber prostitution have become troublesome and ever-growing crimes.

Modern technological advancement through information and sharing invites criminals to exploit the technology to expose people, especially children and women, to violence and exploitation.

Taradji underscored the important role of ASEAN member states to fight the increasing number of cases of cyber pornography and cyber prostitution in the region.
