Microsoft unveils new logo after 25 years

As it prepares to launch its new Windows 8 operating system, software giant Microsoft has a new logo —for the first time after 25 years.

Also for the first time, Microsoft has included a symbol in its logo: the four squares of its well-known Windows logo, tech site The Next Web reported. The last time that Microsoft unveiled a new logo was in 1987, as the company rode on the rising popularity of personal computers.

A Seattle Times report supposedly quoted Microsoft’s general manager of brand strategy as saying the new logo aims to “signal the heritage but also signal the future — a newness and freshness.”

Microsoft's new logo uses the Segoe font, which has been used in Microsoft’s software and branding for some years, The Next Web added.

The new logo has already been incorporated into Microsoft's site, as well as on its Twitter and Facebook accounts.
