Steam now on Linux –with 60 games!

Here's another reason for computer users to make the switch to Linux: popular gaming service Steam has arrived on the platform.

At least 60 supported games come bundled with Steam for Linux, along with other features like online play, achievements and friend lists, according to a report on PC World.

"The problem with Linux, at least for now, is that game support is extremely limited. Linux has only 60 games on Steam right now, compared to nearly 1900 games for PC. Many major publishers, such as Activision, EA, and Ubisoft, have avoided Linux entirely. Valve will need to get those publishers on board with Linux for the Steam Box to be a hit," PC World said.

Until Feb. 21, nearly all Linux games will be on sale, with discounts as high as 80 percent off for some games.

The highlights include Serious Sam 3 for $8, Bastion for $3.74 and Half-Life for $2.49.

"Because Steam games work across all platforms, the sale prices apply for Windows and Mac users as well," PC World said.

Last November, Valve had released a closed beta for Linux, and launched the public beta in December.

The final version is now available through Steam's website or the Ubuntu Software Center, PC World said.

Big picture

Steam for Linux includes Big Picture, a mode optimized for television screens and game controllers.

PC World said this could be a key feature for Valve, which plans to launch a “Steam Box” console to compete with Microsoft (Xbox), Sony (PlayStation), and Nintendo (Wii).

It added Valve also said other companies can make their own Steam Box consoles, and can use Microsoft's Windows if they wish. — TJD, GMA News
