Audio indicators for Chrome tabs now in the works

Have many tabs open on Google's Chrome browser and don't know which one of them is playing —or recording— sound? Google may soon have you covered.

Google is working on a new feature involving audio indicators that will show "noisy" tabs, and even keep them open when memory runs out, tech site The Next Web reported.

"It turns out this feature is already in the latest Canary (early) build of Google Chrome (not Chromium). Furthermore, it works on Flash sites, confirming support for plugins is actively being developed," it said.

Under the proposed feature, Google an audio animation appears if a tab is playing or recording sound, The Next Web said.

It said a user, François Beaufort, spotted the new feature and recorded a short audio clip to show how the new feature looks.

"You can now clearly see when a tab is actually playing audio, although it’s unknown if this will work with plugins," it said.

The Next Web also quoted Beaufort as saying Google may "protect" these tabs from being closed when memory runs out.

On the other hand, it said the feature may also be useful for identifying which tab is playing a loud sound. — TJD, GMA News
