SNEAK PREVIEW: Angry Birds cartoon premiering March 16

Hurtling soon to an Internet connection near you: catch the Angry Birds in their own Web cartoon starting March 16.

Rovio Entertainment said the animated series features the lovable characters from the monster hit video game of the same name.

"What makes Bomb Bird so angry? Why is the King Pig the King Pig? And are those mischievous piggies ever going to get hold of the eggs? It’s time to find out!" it said.

The Angry Birds cartoon series is set on Piggy Island, promising audiences a chance to get "up close and personal with your favorite characters."

Rovio introduced Angry Birds as a game in 2009 to mobile audiences.

It has since become a huge merchandising empire covering everything from movies to T-shirts, stuffed toys, cookbooks, and even a tie-up with the "Star Wars" franchise.

The franchise is centered on the baddie pigs stealing the Angry Birds' eggs, prompting the Angry Birds to throw themselves at structures built by the pigs.

A report on CNET said Rovio had hinted at turning the popular game into an animated series last year.

It also said an Angry Birds movie is in the works, and may make its debut in 2016. — TJD, GMA News
