Is Google borrowing a page from browser makers Opera and Amazon, by working on a page-compression proxy feature for its Chrome browser for Android devices?
A report on tech site The Next Web said Google is testing the feature that could speed up Chrome for Android just like Opera Turbo and Amazon Silk.
"The feature is currently optional but could one day be flipped on by default if Google deems it ready, significantly helping those on slow connections," The Next Web said.
Opera and Amazon speed up the browser on mobile devices with slow connections by having their own proxy servers compress web pages and sending those compressed pages to their respective browsers.
The Next Web said developer and regular Google-watcher François Beaufort spotted the new feature in a Chromium build released on Friday.
Chromium is the open source web browser project on which Google's Chrome browser is based. New features are usually added to Chromium first.
The Next Web said Google may use its SPDY proxy servers. Google developed the SPDY protocol, which seeks to improve browsing by forcing SSL encryption and speeding up page loads. — TJD, GMA News
