Google makes Gmail's new compose window default for all users

Users of Google's Gmail may have to get used to changes in the way they compose their emails, after the search giant made the new compose window default for everyone.

Gmail product manager Phil Sharp said the new compose window that was launched last October should give users a "faster, simpler" compose experience.

"(W)e're now ready to introduce the new compose experience as the default for everyone," he said in a blog post Friday, Manila time.

Many Gmail users in the Philippines experienced the updated compose mail on Good Friday.

A help page by Google described the new "Compose mail" experience as fast, simple and powerful, allowing users to minimize drafts and composing two messages at once.

The new compose window has options for embedding "photos, links, emoticons, and Google Calendar events."

Google said the writing pane "grows as (the) message gets longer," and can become a separate popup window.

Closing the window will automatically save the draft.

"Gmail automatically saves your drafts while you’re writing, so we've removed the 'Save now' button (but you can verify that it’s saved if you see the word, 'Saved' next to the Discard button). Your draft will also be automatically saved when you close the compose window," Google said.

Sharp said the new compose will roll out to everyone over the next few days.

But a separate article on The Next Web said not everyone may like the new compose and reply windows as "some users have gotten used to, or simply prefer, how Gmail worked before."

"If you’re still not sold, Google is asking for feedback on… you guessed it, Google+," it said. — ELR, GMA News
