New Thief game, new voice actor

Fans of the critically-acclaimed dark fantasy stealth franchise, Thief, will be happy to know that Square Enix has released the game’s first trailer online, as can be seen in gaming website Eurogamer.

The official trailer sees series’ star Garrett return to form with his signature bow and arrows, gleaming mechanical eye, masterful lock picking, and preternatural talent for sinking into dark corners and merging with the shadows. We are also reintroduced into “The City” – the dark, misty locale that served as our favorite thief’s playground in the original series.

Square Enix’s official blurb about the game drops some hints as to what the game will be about: "There is a rising tide of fear in The City. Hatred saturates every stone and whilst the rich prosper, the less fortunate face misery and repression. Ravaged with sickness and famine, they wait for something to change.

“Into this shadowy world steps Garrett the Master Thief in a first-person adventure featuring intelligent design that allows players to take full control, with freedom to choose how they approach and overcome each challenge and forge their own path through the game.”

As those who have been following rumors are already aware of, the new Thief game will not pick up where Thief: Deadly Shadows left off. It will, instead, be a reboot of the game.

One thing that may disappoint fans is developer Eidos Montreal’s decision to replace series veteran Stephen Russel as the voice of the titular hero, Garrett. For fans of the stealth genre in general, this come as another shock, following Hideo Kojima’s already controversial move to ditch David Hayter as the voice of Solid Snake in his new Metal Gear game.

The Thief reboot will be released for the PC, PlayStation 4, and “other next-generation consoles”, according to the blurb. — TJD, GMA News
