Russian hackers exploited a security flaw that allowed gamers to download the upcoming game "Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon" early, a gaming site reported Wednesday (Manila time).
GameRanx.com said the hackers exploited a flaw in game publisher Ubisoft's uPlay launcher, which carries most Ubisoft titles and even some from EA and Square Enix.
"The hack has allowed users to download advance copies of 'Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon' - a game which has yet to be officially released. Weighing in at 3051 MB, the game is complete in a fully playable state and is only available through use of the hack," GameRanx.com said.
It said the hackers developed an app that tricked tricks the uPlay executable into "believing that the user has ownership over games that they do not own."
"It is possible to acquire the direct download link for the game and play it offline, thereby bypassing the uPlay DRM," it added.
A separate report on PC World said Ubisoft took down the uPlay service offline "until it fixes" the issue.
PC World also said footage from the affected game was posted briefly on YouTube but has since been removed. — TJD, GMA News
