Though the Wii U has been making a lot of noise of late, it is good to know that Nintendo has not forgotten the 3DS. Nintendo has just recently announced three new games, from three beloved franchises, to be released soon for the handheld console.

A Yoshi’s Island Sequel

First up is the new Yoshi’s Island game. The original Yoshi’s Island, release in 1995 for the Super Nintendo, served as a prequel to all Mario games, and endeared fans with its gorgeous, crayon-colored visuals and unique gameplay. Its 2006 sequel was Yoshi’s Island DS.

According to Destructoid, the new Yoshi’s Island will be a sequel to these games and will see Yoshi using familiar moves such as the flutter jump, ground pound, and egg throw. The graphics, though now rendered in 3D, will retain the charming crayon-y look of its predecessor.

The exact title of the new Yoshi’s Island game has yet to be revealed. But this being Nintendo, we can expect something “creative” like Yoshi’s Island 3D. Or New Yoshi’s Island. Or better yet, Super New Yoshi’s Island 3DS 3D.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D

The next franchise to get the 3DS treatment is Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. This is not quite a new game, being a port of the 2010 Wii title, Donkey Kong Country Returns – a game so difficult it (thankfully) gave you the option to have the computer play the game for you.

So what’s new with the 3DS port? For starters, a new difficulty setting makes the game a tad easier. Donkey Kong can now take more hits. He can summon Diddy at will by using at portable barrel. There is a green balloon that will nullify the rage-inducing effects of the greatest killer in the original game – the bottomless pit, which rears its ugly head more times than you can count in every level.

Additionally, there will be eight bonus levels and a wireless co-op mode.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will be released on May 24, according to Destructoid.

A New Zelda Game

Not only is this a new Zelda game, it is implied to be a sequel to the 1992 Super Nintendo classic, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Widely considered one of the greatest Zelda games of all time, A Link to the Past was a landmark title for Nintendo in terms of popularity and commercial success.

The new game was announced at the very last minute of April 17’s Nintendo Direct by none other than the Nintendo America president, Reggie Fils-Aime, according to Kotaku. Aside from its status as a possible A Link to the Past sequel, the details about this title are rather sketchy. One tidbit that did crop up was Link’s new ability to become a drawing, slap himself onto a wall, and slip around corners. Of course, a new story and new dungeons are to be expected, and though the graphics are in 3D, it utilizes the classic top-down perspective.

As of now, the 3DS Zelda game does not have English language subtitles. It will be out late this 2013 to early 2014. — TJD, GMA News
