Samsung may be eyeing Intel for next-gen Galaxy tablet

Samsung's future Galaxy tablets may soon sport a major change that won't be too visible at first glance: an Intel chip instead of the ARM processors in current versions.

Tech site CNET cited industry sources who said the Intel chip may debut in June on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 running Google's Android operating system.

"While Intel processors power a raft of Windows 8 tablets and convertibles, its chips rarely appear in Android tablets. One of the few exceptions has been the Asus FonePad," it said.

It added Samsung usually uses Intel Atom and Core for its Windows 8 machines, and ARM processors for Android tablets.

Citing its sources, CNET said the Intel processor in the coming Galaxy tablet will be a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom CloverTrail+ chip.

It noted the plus sign after CloverTrail indicates a "high-performance PowerVR SGX544 MP2 graphic processing unit from Imagination Technologies."

Other features of the tablet, which may be unveiled at the Computex in Taipei starting June 4, include Android 4.2.2 and a 1280 x 800 display. — TJD, GMA News
