LEGO to unveil huge model of Sydney Opera House in September

LEGO is about to make jaws drop this September with yet another masterpiece: a massive model of the Sydney Opera House.

The model of the iconic structure will have 2,989 pieces and measure 28 by 63.5 by 38 cm, according to CNET's Crave gadget blog.

"The model is offering a few neat perks for LEGO brick collectors: rare dark-tan LEGO bricks, tiles and sloped bricks, as well as the company's first-ever 48x48 stud baseplate in blue—and the curved white pieces that form the Opera House's sails," it said.

It added this will make the Sydney Opera House the latest iconic structure in LEGO's Creator Expert range of large models.

Other structures in that range include the Taj Mahal in India, the Eiffel Tower in France, and the Tower Bridge in the United Kingdom.

CNET's Crave said the Sydney Opera House model will sell for A$399.99 (P16,315).

Crave said that while LEGO had produced an official Sydney Opera House set in its Architecture range, "let's be honest: an awful lot of detail got lost in the model's tiny size."

In its Architecture range page, LEGO said the Sydney Opera House is "a masterpiece of late modern architecture and an iconic building of the 20th century."

"The building’s architectural form comprises three groups of interlocking vaulted ‘shells’ that appear like billowing sails filled by the sea winds. The buildings are set upon a vast terraced podium and surrounded by flat broadwalks that function as pedestrian promenades," it said.

It added that since the Sydney Opera House opened in 1973, more than 45 million people have attended more than 100,000 performances, and more than 100 million people have visited the site. —VC, GMA News
