Rivals Globe, PLDT link-up landline network in Davao del Norte

Rivals Globe Telecom Inc. and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) found common ground in Davao del Norte and activated landline interconnection in Davao del Norte, giving
subscribers of both telcos to call across networks free of interconnectivity fees.

The interconnected service also lets their respective customers realize substantial savings from long distance charges that no longer apply.

Before the cross the network interconnectivity was activated, Globe and PLDT customers had to pay a long distance rate of P5 per minute for cross network calls.

“We are delighted to announce that through collaboration and cooperation with competition, the company’s subscribers will have greater access to telecommunications and vice-versa. We are hoping that we will able to establish the same kind of collaboration in other areas of the country,” said Froilan Castelo, Globe head of Corporate and Legal Services Group.

The cooperation was in line with the compulsory interconnection of authorized public telecommunications carriers under Republic Act 7925, Castelo noted.

Regulator National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) mandates this compulsory interconnection among public telecommunications carriers.

Similar arrangements are in the works in Pangasinan, Zambales, Davao del Sur, Misamis Occidental, and Ilocos Norte, Castelo added.

Areas with activate interconnection service between the rival telcos are Metro Manila, Cavite, Iloilo, Capiz, Batangas, Cebu, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Bohol, Leyte, Davao City, Pampanga, Bulacan, Zamboanga, Laguna, Quezon, La Union, Nueva Ecija, and Benguet, General Santos or South Cotabato, and Tarlac. — VS, GMA News
