After a long wait, users of Android phones and iPhones may finally get to download BlackBerry's BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) app.

But BlackBerry's Andrew Bocking said users may not be able to immediately start sending and receiving messages, as a line-up system is in place to cope with demand.

"To help manage this unprecedented pent-up demand for BBM, we are implementing a simple line-up system to ensure a smooth roll out," Bocking said in a blog post.

Users who download BBM will have to open the app and enter their email addresses to hold their spots in the line.

He said BlackBerry will email the users once they reach the front of the line "and can start using BBM."

"If you are among the millions that took the time to sign up at BBM.com, you can start using BBM immediately without waiting in line. If you didn’t sign up in advance, don’t worry – we are focused on moving millions of customers through the line as fast as possible," he added.

Still, Bocking said he was "thrilled" to inform BBM users the app is making its way to the Google Play and App Store markets, and in select Samsung App Stores.

Bocking noted the demand for BBM on Android and BBM on iPhone remains amazing - about six million signed up for information about BBM at BBM.com.

He also thanked BBM users for their patience.

A separate article on TechHive.com said the BBM release came after a leaked version of the app forced the company to stop its rollout.

BBM was once exclusive to Blackberry phones. It allows users to send messages among themselves without the messages counting against their texting plans, it noted. — TJD, GMA News
