Sony has published a short film celebrating PlayStation UK’s storied legacy. Designed to evoke nostalgia for anyone who has ever had the fortune to own a PlayStation gaming system, the video commemorates the company’s past glories and pivotal achievements.

Sony stated that the video was inspired by online messages posted by fans using the hashtag #PlayStationMemories, which went viral on Twitter during the build-up to the February PS4 reveal.

Aside from showing PlayStation’s cultural impact on Britain’s video gaming community, the film also serves as a tantalizing glimpse into Sony Computer Entertainment’s PlayStation 4 launch. The video’s concluding message, “This is for the Players. This is PS4. #4thePlayers”, refers to Sony’s #4thePlayers campaign. According to the company, this marketing investment in the release of a new gaming system will be the biggest in its history.

The past, the future, and beyond

Ever since the 1995 launch of the first PlayStation console system, or PSone, Sony has become a central figure in the gaming industry. PlayStation 2 and 3 proved massively successful, as did the two handhelds, PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita. Sony’s family of game developers are also renowned for releasing pioneering, critically-acclaimed titles, such as Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Heavy Rain, and this year’s surprise hit, The Last of Us.

Sony aims to repeat history with the PlayStation 4. At launch, first party PlayStation 4 games will include Killzone Shadow Fall and a game the whole family can enjoy called Knack. Knack was designed by Merk Cerny, PlayStation 4’s lead system architect, and is meant to usher in a new generation of gamers to the PlayStation brand.

The PlayStation 4’s North American launch is set for November 15 of this year, while it will be available in Europe on November 29, according to Computer and Video Games and GamesRadar. South East Asia can expect a December release for the new platform.
