TESDA handbuilt solar nightlights to be distributed to Yolanda survivors

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and My Shelter Foundation will distribute solar night lights to communities affected by Super Typhoon Yolanda, a TESDA press release said, Friday.

These devices contain a solar cell and battery assembly, for powering a lightbulb at night. Light from the bulb is diffused through a soda bottle filled with water and bleach. The entire assembly is capable of emitting up to 55 watts of illumination.
TESDA and My Shelter Foundation initially planned to produce 1,300 solar night lights to be given to Leyte, Samar, and select communities in the country's poorest municipalities.

A total of 1,000 solar upgrade kits were assembled by trainees from the TESDA Women's Center, several persons with disabilities, and students from the University of Santo Tomas and the Malayan Colleges, at the TESDA Complex in Taguig City.

Several units of solar lights were given to families in Tacloban City, but TESDA and My Shelter Foundation said that they are aiming for mass distribution at the soonest possible time. — TJD, GMA News
