Microsoft's Skype videoconferencing service better watch out: rival Viber is invading the Windows platform with a new app for Windows 8.
Tech site The Next Web said this came shortly after Viber introduced an international calling service that would rival Skype.
Viber's new Windows 8 app uses live tiles and lock screen notifications for Microsoft customers, the report said.
It added that Viber even uses other Windows 8 features such as pinning to the Start menu, snapping to the side using Snap View, and using Microsoft’s Search charm to check for contacts.
The Next Web noted Viber's registered user base tops the 200-million mark, though it makes money by selling stickers and international calling credit.
Viber, which started as a service for only mobile devices, now offers desktop versions of its apps.
"Activity is synced across all services and clients, as you’d expect, while multilingual users will be able to set a unique language for Viber, irrespective of what their primary PC language is," the report added. — KDM, GMA News
