Mozilla partners with Taiwan OEM to make Firefox OS tablets

A Taiwanese company is teaming up with Mozilla to build tablets running the new Firefox OS operating system, a Taiwanese news site reported Tuesday.

But Taiwan's Central News Agency said the tablet by Hon Hai Precision Co. and Mozilla will be aimed more toward developers.

"During the period of building Firefox OS tablets with Mozilla, Hon Hai has realized that the global developer community that Mozilla owns is a great power to drive the development of HTML5-based Web technologies," it quoted Young Liu, the general manager of Hon Hai innovation Digital System Business Group, as saying.

Earlier, Mozilla announced a partnership with Panasonic to bring Firefox OS to smart TVs.

It also announced a contribution program to speed up the development of Firefox OS for tablets.

The CNA report said the contribution program involves a rollout of free tablets to developers so they will be encouraged to join the Firefox OS ecosystem.

For its part, Hon Hai said it will take part in Firefox OS training courses, forums and app competitions, and promote the developer program at schools interested in Firefox OS.

"The participation of Mozilla's global community will contribute to the Firefox OS, HTML5 and other Web technologies, and benefit all our customers," Liu said.

In June 2013, Mozilla and Hon Hai had said they will collaborate on the Firefox OS open platform, which uses HTML5 and open Web technologies. — TJD, GMA News
