The annual Super Bowl championship game of the United States’ National Football League (NFL) has something special to offer the geekier side of its viewership this year: all-new previews of three of the most hotly-anticipated silver screen spectacles of 2014.

Enter: Tyrannosaurus mechs!

The first trailer for the fourth installment in the Michael Bay-helmed live-action Transformers film franchise, “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” hits the stadium stands with the force of a meteorite.

Based on the popular toy franchise, “Transformers: Age of Extinction” formally introduces the Dinobots into the Transformers movie mythos. The new trailer, which is about half a minute long, gives fans and film buffs an official first look at the transforming techno-organic tyrannosaur, Grimlock.

“Transformers: Age of Extinction” has been described as a “soft reboot”  for the franchise; while it remains connected to the original trilogy, it has a new central human character in the form of Mark Wahlberg, replacing previous movie lead Shia Labeouf. The film, which is scheduled to debut internationally on June 27, 2014, also stars Jack Reynor, Sophia Myles, Stanley Tucci, and Kelsey Grammer.

A chilling encounter for the Captain

If the Avengers were a football team, the near-superhuman Steve Rogers would probably be the quarterback. The shield-slinging Super Soldier clashes with the fearsome Winter Soldier in an all-new trailer for the upcoming “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

The Super Bowl TV spot for the much-anticipated sequel offers a new glimpse at the origin of Captain America’s mysterious new foe, as well as an extended look at the Captain’s new partner, the high-flying Falcon.

Based on the comic book story penned by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Steve Epting, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” stars Chris Evans as the time-displaced World War II hero. Joining the Sentinel of Liberty this time around are Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Anthony Mackie as the Falcon, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. The sequel will storm Philippine shores on March 26, 2014.

Along came a spider

An amazing number of teasers swing into action for what could arguably be the superhero spectacular of the year, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Promising more twists, more villains, more trials, and more of Peter Parker’s hilariously lame excuses to Aunt May, a sizzle reel debuted on the official Sony Pictures YouTube page, in addition to the two-part Super Bowl teaser for the upcoming sequel.

The 3:50 film teaser details Spider-Man’s first encounter with his shocking new foe, Electro. It also appears to plant the seeds for the eventual formation of the Sinister Six, an all-villain team that has plagued Spider-Man’s comic book career since The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 in 1964.

An earlier press release from Sony Pictures revealed that plans to expand the scope of the cinematic Spider-verse included solo films for both the Sinister Six and the webslinger’s symbiotic nemesis, Venom.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” stars Andrew Garfield as New York’s spidery son, Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man. As the wallcrawler tries to balance his relationship with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and keep his crimefighting career a secret from his Aunt May (Sally Field), he finds himself facing immensely difficult odds in the form of super-villains Electro (Jamie Foxx) and the Rhino (Paul Giamatti). The father-son team of Norman (Chris Cooper) and Harry Osborn (Dale Dehaan) may also hold the key to unlocking the secrets of Peter Parker’s past, present, and future. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” will spin a web of great power and great responsibility in Philippine cinemas on April 30, 2014. — TJD, GMA News
