This is the biggest Godzilla to date

Humanity’s hubris and underestimating the forces of science and nature are literally coming back to bite them this May, as Warner Bros. and Legendary reveal a very intimidating poster of the much anticipated remake of Japan’s legendary “King of Monsters” himself, Godzilla!

Released via Yahoo! Movies, the new one sheet displays exactly how large and scary the creature will be, as he literally stands between heaven and earth with an entire city falling prey to his wrath and destruction following the beast’s trail wherever he goes.

Also released is the brand new theatrical trailer, showcasing just how fearsome a return Gojira will have come May!

As a combination of the Japanese words “Gorira” and “Kujira” for “Gorilla” and “Whale” respectively, Godzilla is known as “Gojira” in its native Japan, and first appeared in the film of the same name (known as Godzilla, King of Monsters! In the US) in 1954. Directed by Ishiro Honda, the film sees Japan invaded by a giant mutated dinosaur-like monster, which brings back horrible memories for the country following the nuclear attacks experienced in World War II.

The concept of a giant creature attacking humanity became so popular that the “Kaiju” genre was born as a result, and Godzilla returned in several more movies later on, resuming his role as a destroyer or occasionally finding himself in the ironic position of saving humanity against another monster that he challenged head on.

Directed by British film director and “Monsters” helmer Garth Edwards with a screenplay by Max Borenstein, the new Godzilla film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, and Ken Watanabe, and reintroduces Toho’s iconic monster back into the big screen after a ten-year hiatus.

Following the disastrous 1998 American movie based on the franchise that reimagined the creature as an Iguana-Dinosaur hybrid, Warner Bros. and Legendary have worked together on this second film bearing the same name to reboot things entirely and stay true to the original concept that made “Gojira” such a hit worldwide. In fact, the 2014 film not only heralds the beast’s return to movies, but also commemorates Godzilla’s 60th Anniversary after appearing in over 20 movies since being introduced in its own feature film.
