An antivirus maker found itself the target of malware, after it discovered a fake version of its antivirus software making the rounds of the Internet.

Bitdefender warned the public against a new scam promising a copy of the Bitdefender suite for 2015 via Facebook and YouTube.

"The fake Bitdefender antivirus download posted on YouTube leads users to fraudulent surveys and premium SMS scams. The video had hundreds of views and several French users posted messages to warn others," Bitdefender's Bianca Stanescu said in a blog post.

She said the scams claim the Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2015 "has been launched,” and has many advanced features.

As in past cases, she said the scammers' messages are "grammatically-troubled" and should alert users.

Yet, those who fall for the scam will be made to complete a fraudulent survey that promises commissions for the scammers.

"Users never get to download Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2015, but they are redirected to scams such as premium SMS fraud that copies Facebook’s design to look like a legitimate app of the social network," she added.

Also, she said some “entrepreneurs” have also been spreading license keys for Bitdefender Total Security on Facebook.

She said Bitdefender has reported the fake YouTube video and the deceptive Facebook profile.

In the meantime, she advised users "to be cautious before downloading security software from third parties." — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
