Character creation systems are an essential component of just about every computer role-playing experience, but Black Desert takes it to the next level.

Produced in South Korea by developer Pearl Abyss, Black Desert is a sandbox style MMORPG that in most cases, wouldn't be much to write about. However, in addition to its detailed weather modeling system, seamless open world and reports of parkour style traversal, Black Desert features a character creator that permits a level of customization like no other.

The above video shows that you can adjust nearly every aspect of your character's physical appearance. Facial hair including eyelashes and eyebrows can be tweaked. Body fat and musculature can be sculpted to accommodate a broad range of body types. Even facial structure can be reshaped by selecting from over a dozen facial groups. And that's not even accounting for vanity options such as hair color, eye color, skin tone and tattoos.

The level of control and customization is insane. It's possible that this video is not a player interface, but a developer tool for creating custom NPCs and cinematic quality character objects. Still it's an impressive level of detail for an MMORPG, a genre that usually scales down its technology to accommodate a broad range of users with various PC configurations and specs.

In addition to this amazing character tool, Black Desert will feature combat comparable to today's action MMOs with active block and active dodge and combination chains. Siege events will also play a significant role in the game. A detailed economy, which is a staple in MMOs, will also be present allowing players to engage in crafting and trading to accumulate more in-game wealth and prestige.

Black Desert is set to be released in Korea, Japan and Russia. According to its official Korean language Facebook page, the game's second closed beta begins April 22 in South Korea. It is said that the game will definitely be localized for an English language speaking player base, but without a publisher signed, that's still up in the air. — TJD, GMA News
