Jem and the Holograms live-action film cast confirmed

Another cartoon and toyline gem from the 80’s is getting the live-action treatment, and it’s going to be an outrageous ride for fans that grew up with it back in its heyday.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a  month after announcing his intentions to make a movie based on the series, Jon M. Chu has found his stars for the live-action film adaptation of “Jem and the Holograms,” based on the 1985-1988 show of the same name created by Christy Marx that was a joint production between Hasbro, Marvel Productions, and Sunbow Productions.

Unlike many cartoons at the time, the show catered to music audiences as well, showcasing “MTV” styled videos, and writing original songs that defined the protagonists and their rival music groups, The Misfits and The Stingers. The title song “Jem – Truly Truly Outrageous” remains one of the more popular tunes of the show, and was used as the opening for the first two seasons and the closing theme for the entire duration of the series.

Known for her role as Layla Grant in the TV Series Nashville, Audrey Peeples has been given the coveted titular role as Jem. Disney show “A.N.T. Farm” actress Stefanie Scott joins her as Jem’s sister and the group’s songwriter Kimber, while Aurora Perrineua and Hayley Kiyoko round up the cast as their foster sisters Shana and Aja. Shooting has already begun for the movie, and will be produced Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun Productions, and Jon M. Chu himself.

The script, written by Ryan Landels, will depict the characters in a different light, seeing Jem as an orphaned teenage girl who embarks on a quest to unlock a mysterious message left behind by her father, while climbing up the ranks and becoming a musical icon at the same time.

No stranger to directing a film based on a classic franchise, Chu is best known for directing the 2013 action film based on Hasbro’s popular G.I.Joe toyline - G.I. Joe: Retaliation starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Roadblock and Bruce Willis as General Joseph Colton. With the resurgence of other popular 80’s properties like Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and getting the live action treatment, Jem and the Holograms fits the bill and is another property that nostalgia critics will see reimagined for the 21st century. — TJD, GMA News
