Dungeons & Dragons unveils new logo for 40th anniversary

Classic role-playing game "Dungeons & Dragons" is getting a gift of sorts for its 40th anniversary: a new logo with a special focus, curiously enough, on the ampersand in its name.

In the new logo, the ampersand resembles a dragon "sporting fiery breath," tech site Mashable reported late Monday (PHL time).

"Dungeons & Dragons tabletop RPG players have been used to seeing a new logo with the release of new editions, but never before have we seen such a dramatic evolution of the brand," Mashable quoted brand director Nathan Stewart as saying in an email.

Stewart, brand director for D&D at publisher Wizards of the Coast, said this could be a key year for D&D.

Mashable said the logo was refreshed in time for the next wave of products for fifth edition.

The ampersand in the new logo has "increased in size and prominence within the text," it added.

In the meantime, Mashable said the first D&D starter kits will be released July 15, while a new rulebook and adventures from the upcoming Tyranny of Dragons adventure will come out on Aug. 19.

On the other hand, the new rules have been play-tested with 175,000 players, Mashable added. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
