Looks like business is about to pick up for a certain Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe, as Marvel Studios has finally chosen a director for their long-awaited film adaptation of one of the most popular magic using superheroes in comics – Doctor Strange!

Making the announcement via his official Twitter account, Scott Derrickson—the director of the horror films “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” and “Sinister”—has made it known that he will be the man helming the project:

Derrickson is certainly no stranger to the occult and the mysterious: in addition to directing the aforementioned horror films, Derrickson also directed the remake of the science fiction film “The Day The Earth Stood Still”, and is set to release his next project with “Deliver Us From Evil” later this July.

First appearing in the pages of “Strange Tales #110” and created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange is a practitioner and master of magic, who serves as the protector of Earth and is known as the “Sorcerer Supreme”. Formerly an egotistical neurosurgeon, Stephen lost the ability to operate after a car accident costs him irreparable damage to his hands. He seeks treatment from a wise hermit in the Himalayas called The Ancient One, but is rebuffed because of his attitude and demeanor. However, when The Ancient One’s own disciple Baron Mordo tries to kill his master, Stephen saves the old man and is changed by his experiences. Now a practictioner of the mystic arts, he takes on the heroic identity of “Doctor Strange” and serves as Earth’s protector.

No release date has been given yet for Doctor Strange, but there are tentative dates that Marvel has secured for in July 8, 2016 and May 5, 2017 that may go to the film. It is slated to be in the cards for “Phase 3” of Marvel Studios’ line of films under the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” banner. — TJD, GMA News
