Pacific Rim sequel and animated series officially announced

 

One of the high marks of Hollywood cinematic history for the year 2013 has got to be Guillermo del Toro’s love letter to the Japanese Mecha and Monster genre with “Pacific Rim”. Featuring giant robots piloted by humans who repell the invading forces of gigantic alien monsters, the film went on to gross $411 Million worldwide, and became an instant success for Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures.

 

Following the film’s success, a sequel was officially announced in 2014, but a definite date wasn’t specified. Fans expected the announcement to come around soon, and the filmmakers began developing treatments and ideas on what to use for the follow-up. Finally, via Legendary’s official YouTube channel, Guillermo del Toro officially announced that Pacific Rim 2 was coming to theaters on April, 2017, and the film would be released in 2D as well as both 3D and IMAX 3D formats. The film will however be distributed this time by Universal Pictures, after the studio entered a partnership with Legendary following the expiration of the latter’s deal with Warner Bros. Pictures this year.

 

 

What’s more, Del Toro also announced that between this year and 2017, a Pacific Rim animated series would also be developed. It will continue the story explored in the prequel comic book series “Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero”, which takes place twelve years before the events of the first film. The director also announced he is co-writing the screenplay with Zak Penn, who also co-wrote the stories for the superhero movies The Avengers, X2: X-Men United, and X-Men: The Last Stand.

 

Set in the 2020’s, Pacific Rim tells the story of Earth’s war against giant monstrous known as “Kaiju” by using man-made giant robots that are dubbed “Jaegers”. Focusing on a former pilot named Raleigh Becket, the young man is called back into action by his commanding officer Stacker Pentecost when only a few Jaegers remain as humanity’s last line of defense against the Kaiju. Paired together with a rookie pilot and Japanese woman named Mako Mori, Raleigh goes back into action in his old Jaeger Gipsy Danger, and take part in a desperate plan to close the portal that the Kaiju’s come from once and for all.

 

Pacific Rim 2 has been given a definite release date of April 7, 2017. — TJD, GMA News
