There's certainly hope in the world when you see an amateur on a shoestring budget one-upping a Hollywood blockbuster.

Director-producer Michael Bay could indeed learn a thing or two from an amateur filmmaker who is getting rave reviews for his own take on the Transformers.

Stop-motion animation enthusiast Harris Loureiro posted last July 1 a four-plus-minute stop-motion animation depicting Optimus Prime going up against the Constructicons.

"This video is dedicated to all Transformers G1 and 3P fans... hope you guys enjoy watching it," Loureiro said:

In the stop-motion movie, Prime engages the six Constructicons in battle and appears on the verge of defeat when his foes merge into Devastator - but G1 fans who watched the original 1986 Transformers movie should have an idea what happens during an Autobot's darkest hour.

Loureiro said he shot the stop motion as early as September last year, but edited the video only last May.

It took him more than a month for the editing and including the special and sound effects, he said.

He even hinted the film could have been more awesome, saying some of the scenes were lost when his external hard drive crashed.

And get rave reviews he did.

"Michael Bay, watch and learn," said one viewer.

"Infinitely better than Bay's Transformers!" said another.

"Behold....the greatest transformers movie ever made. Michael Bay should be jealous!" still another said.

Escapist Magazine branded the YouTube video "nothing short of awesome," and the fight scene "about a thousand times more faithful to the original vision of the Transformers than anything a certain series of a popular films has produced."

"(W)e hope he's proud of the work he was able to complete as it's pretty danged fantastic," it added.

"Michael Bay might have the multi-million dollar budget, but Harris Loureiro has the '80s touch," tech site The Verge added. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
