There's only space in the world for one Snake and one Big Boss, and now it seems that the next game in Hideo Kojima’s epic Metal Gear Solid franchise is going to justify that saying in a big way by giving fans new and impressive ways to sneak, spring into action, and complete missions in the upcoming installment that is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Making a first-time appearance in the annual Gamescom trade fair convention, the legendary video game developer and head of Kojima Productions was there to showcase the latest innovations made in the still being developed sequel, which is a continuation of the story of Naked Snake/ Big Boss – the legendary mercenary who’s life would be the figurehead and common factor that ties everything in the Metal Gear franchise altogether.
At Sony Computer Entertainment’s press conference, Kojima presented the latest advancements in using one of Snake’s most trusty tools: the Cardboard Box.
In previous games, the box was used to hide from enemies or transport players to another location by hiding behind a truck.
With the power of Kojima Productions’ proprietary Fox Engine, Snake can now use the box in ways that are realistic and beyond. For instance, he can use the box to spring up and immediate shoot enemies, or plaster images to distract and get their attention while making a run for it or taking them out with CQC.
In a fitting display of humor, Kojima also included the “PS4” box for the demonstration, which only fits on Snake’s head.
Later, at an interview with Kojima-San conducted by GTTV’s Geoff Knightley, more details as well as a new gameplay demonstration were revealed for The Phantom Pain. Similar to what was shown in this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in the US, the gameplay demo once again saw Snake in Afghanistan on a rescue mission to save his friend Kazuhira “Kaz” Miller, but with a few new things to do and show-off that was exclusive for Gamescom.
New methods of taking down the enemy were shown using the flora and fauna the Fox Engine provides, such as Horse excrement causing a truck to spin out of control and its passengers out cold enough for Snake to use Fulton Recovery on. If that wasn’t enough, the new Cardboard Box abilities were also demonstrated impressively as Big Boss infiltrates the base, and the way he takes down a chopper towards the end of the mission is simply… Amazing.

If that wasn’t enough demonstration packed with excitement, Kojima had one more surprise for the video game public. Replaying an extended version of the “Cardboard Box” demonstration, there were a few new “boxes” to show off towards the end of the video, including a very humorous and subtle confirmation that Metal Gear Solid V is coming to Steam. Konami’s web team actually released the news ahead that both Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are indeed going to PC, and it will be the first main Metal Gear Solid series game that’s coming out for the platform after a long time.
While no news on the game’s release date has been given yet, Kojima did say that it’s in the final development stages. Since he’s also busy developing a new Silent Hill game with movie director Guillermo Del Toro, the video game developer certainly has a lot on his hands. He’s literally “Kept Us Waiting” like Snake himself, but fans and this writer certainly don’t mind if the best is certainly coming after seeing what one can do with a game like this. — TJD, GMA News
