Online registry to make DepEd more responsive to students' needs

The Department of Education has nearly completed updating data for its Learner's Information System (LIS), an online registry of enrollees in public schools meant to make the agency more responsive to students' needs.

According to DepEd, only 140 of 46,648 public schools — 0.3 percent — have yet to submit data for academic year 2014-2015. The school divisions where the 140 schools are located have already been instructed to submit the data.

The LIS, rolled out in 2011, is expected to give the DepEd more accurate information on public school students, including the total number of enrollees in the public school system as well as where they are. The system can, for example, monitor learners who transfer between public schools.

“Considering the size of the Department and the number schools under it, it is very critical for the agency to be equipped with the right information at the right time to be able to make better decisions. This is essentially an online registry of learners that is important for any educational system or institution. We need to continually get to know our learners better so that we can respond better,” Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro, FSC said in a press statement.

He said the system has helped DepEd in planning, budgeting and resource allocation.

“What used to take ten months to collect, consolidate and validate has now been reduced to three months. This is a result of the use of technology and the power of our people,” he said. — JDS, GMA News
