Government and the private sector are hoping to combat the forecast power shortage this summer with the Interruptible Load Program, which allows large establishments and companies to use their own generators during peak hours.
However, one company is also urging the public to start saving energy in their own homes. “A power outage can be catastrophic for the economy,” said Fabia Tetteroo-Bueno, country manager of Philips Philippines, which has launched a campaign called #MayMagagawaKa to call attention to the fact that even ordinary citizens can do something to help energy conservation by "choosing the right" LED bulbs, which Philips manufactures.
According to Philips’s campaign, LED lights are an environment-friendly, energy-efficient alternative to older light sources. It’s predicted that by 2015, LEDs will make up 45% of the lights used globally.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, lighting accounts for almost one-fifth of global energy, equivalent to around 1.9 billion tons of carbon emissions per year.
“We are consuming way beyond our limits,” said WWF president and CEO Joel Palma. “In terms of consumption, we’re already running on 1.5 planets.”
Henry Schumacher, executive vice president of the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), said that power interruptions “affect the quality of power and disrupt business.”
He added that people should “stop complaining” and instead be part of the solution, clarifying that if people don’t want to do their part, then they have no choice but to expect business disruptions.
