WATCH: Star Wars’ R2-D2-themed jumbo jet taking to the skies later this year
R2-D2, the lovable droid in "Star Wars," may not be a Twitter emoji for now, but something way cooler: a motif on a jumbo jet.
That's because an airline – All Nippon Airways – has adopted an R2-D2 motif for its B787 jumbo jet, and posted a video of it on its YouTube channel.
"The R2-D2 character has a reputation for strong, reliable service—one of the hallmarks of ANA’s 5-star quality service," it said.
Besides, it said the R2-D2 motif is a "great match to ANA’s blue logo and design that appear on the main fuselage."
ANA, in an announcement on its website, said it launched a five-year ANA "Star Wars Project" leading up to 2020 to "connect Japan to the global market."
It said the jet with the R2-D2 livery is scheduled to fly on international routes this autumn.
"With the skies as our stage, we are embarking on a range of novel initiatives as we head into the future. Expect a new world full of surprises!" ANA added.
ANA described R2-D2 as tops in reliability and "highly loyal."
"(W)henever he faces challenge he comes up with an original idea to succeed the mission," it said.
This should be a consolation of sorts for fans of R2-D2, which was not among the first characters featured as emojis on Twitter in time for the upcoming "Star Wars VII" film.
An article on tech site The Verge noted the design "is not too much of a stretch, as both the Dreamliner and fictional R2-D2 share the confines of a tube enclosure." — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
