YouTube, Google's popular video sharing platform, will no longer be accessible on some older devices, including those running Apple's iOS and Google TV.

In a support page article, Google said this is due to an upgrade to the YouTube Data API - whose downside involves shutting down the old API.

"As we upgrade the YouTube Data API to bring more features, we’ll begin shutting down the old version on April 20, 2015. This will result in the current YouTube app not working on certain device models from 2012 and older," it said.

It said the devices that will be affected include:

  • select devices manufactured in 2012 and earlier, including Sony and Panasonic TVs and Blu-ray Discs
  • older iOS devices
  • devices running older versions of Google TV.

YouTube said it will continue to improve the official YouTube app for TV, which it said is available on most 2013 and newer Smart TVs and Blu-ray players, game consoles and streaming devices.

iOS devices

YouTube advised users of Apple devices running iOS 7 or above to download the YouTube app from the App Store. If not, they can visit m.youtube.com.

But those with Apple TV second generation or older are out of luck - "there’s no current way to watch YouTube on these devices."

Google TV

As for users of devices running Google TV version 2 and older, they cannot upgrade either.

Smart TV, consoles

Owners of smart TVs and game consoles can use their web browsers supporting Flash and/or HTML5 to visit www.youtube.com. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
