Meet Microsoft Edge, Explorer's successor

From the ashes of Internet Explorer comes a new browser from Microsoft. Meet Edge.

Microsoft announced Edge - formerly codenamed Spartan - will be the default browser in its upcoming Windows 10 operating system.

"Microsoft Edge is the future of our browser strategy," program manager Kyle Pflug said in a blog post.

He said the new browser will debut a revamped New Tab page and a new web-based extension model for Edge.

While he did not give further details, a separate YouTube post said Edge lets users "write directly on webpages and share your mark-ups with others."

"Read online articles free of distraction or use the offline reading feature for greater convenience," it added.

But Edge, touted to be more open and embrace new technologies, does retain a part of its Microsoft legacy - the logo.

Pflug posted on his Twitter account an image of the Edge logo, which like IE is a stylized "e" with a "halo".

"(I)t makes Microsoft Edge look like a bold stride into the future that refuses to close the door on the past," remarked tech site The Verge.

TechCrunch said Edge's other features may include:

- built-in Cortana support
- built-in reader, note-taking and sharing features
- design focus on simplicity and minimalism
- new rendering engine called EdgeHTML

The Next Web added developers can port their extensions for Google's Chrome browser into Edge.
It added hovering over a tab will now show a preview of the site’s content. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
