Rides on e-trikes in Bacoor, Cavite are now just a text away, according to a report on GMA News TV's morning news program "News to Go".

According to Edmund Araga, Vice President for Manufacturing at K.E.A. Industrial Corp., their e-trikes are battery-powered and environment-friendly. They can be recharged at charging stations for P40 for every 8 hours of charging, which gives them enough energy for the whole day.

Commuters can text a central number with information about their destination and pick-up point, and the system will send over an e-trike. Commuters will receive a message with information about the driver and the e-tricycle that will pick them up.

Each e-tricycle can carry up to 6-7 passengers. The fee for hiring an e-trike through text is P60. There are currently 10 e-trikes making rounds in Bacoor.

Considering the fact that 80% of air pollution comes from motor vehicles, the advent of electric vehicles is a step towards cleaner air. Total Suspended Particulates (TSP) is a type of air pollution that can cause heart diseases or respiratory illnesses. According to Herminio Buerano, Jr., President of the Coalition of Clean Air Advocates, TSPs can’t be filtered by regular masks.

The World Health Organization states that the standard TSP measurement is 90 micrograms per normal cubic liter. Any higher and it becomes detrimental to a person’s health. But Metro Manila’s air reaches levels of 106-166 micrograms per normal cubic liter. — Bea Montenegro/DVM, GMA News
