Facebook has committed to inform its users of when their accounts are the subjects of "targeted attacks" from any attacker "suspected of working on behalf of a nation-state."

Chief security officer Alex Stamos said in a note to Facebook users over the weekend that the social media network will "constantly monitor for potentially malicious activity and offer many options to proactively secure your account."

Stamos also said Facebook will send a specific notification to users whose accounts have "been targeted or compromised."

He said attacks on behalf of nation-states "tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others, and we strongly encourage affected people to take the actions necessary to secure all of their online accounts."

To safeguard their "methods and processes", Stamos explained that Facebook "often won't be able to explain how we attribute certain attacks to suspected attackers."  — Earl Victor Rosero, GMA News
