With Facebook's rollout of Oculus Rift going full steam, the company has firmly and soundly thrown its hat in the ring when it comes to virtual reality.

Future VR: Ubiquitous, unseen

In his keynote address at the F8 Developer Conference on April 12, Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg eyed the ubiquity and invisibility of virtual reality devices in the not-too-distant future.

“Eventually, we’re gonna have what looks like normal-looking glasses that can do both virtual and augmented reality,” Zuckerberg said.

“If I want to show my friends a photo, in the future, I can snap my fingers and pull out a photo and make it as big as you want,” he added.

Observers were impressed by the device's mockup design, which resembles a pair of ordinary spectacles and which is reminiscent of similar devices donned by clandestine agents in spy movies.

Other VR efforts

Zuckerberg also announced the release of touch controllers later this year to complement the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

“Instead of looking around, you will now also be able to modify the world, where you will be able to pick things up and give them to other people and interact,” Zuckerberg said.

“VR has the potential to be the most social platform because you would actually feel like you are right there with another person,” he concluded. — Kiersnerr Gerwin Tacadena/TJD, GMA News
