XSplit developer acquires Player.me, Challonge

SplitmediaLabs Limited, the developer of internet live streaming and broadcast software XSplit Gamecaster and XSplit Broadcaster, announced on July 14, 2016 its acquisition of Player.me, a social discovery platform, and Challonge, a tournament management service.

SplitmediaLabs acquired the two companies as part of its $10 million investment strategy to develop a platform whose purpose is to enhance the experience of gamers worldwide—specifically by connecting the whole gaming community with content relevant to them. The combined entity will boast more than 8 million registered users, 2 million unique visitors per month, and more than 90,000 tournaments created monthly.

“Both products deliver the best in class experience in their respective areas. To date we’ve been mainly focused on maintaining leadership and driving organic growth of XSplit, but these acquisitions will move us into the realm of providing more services for the gaming community as part of a grander vision,” stated SplitmediaLabs CEO Henrik Levring.

“There has been tremendous growth in our particular space recently, but very little coming out is truly different,” Levring continued. “We’re going to shake things up a bit over the next few years, by making streaming opportunities as accessible and rewarding as possible for all, from individual players and content creators to eSports entrepreneurs and publishers. We’ll have more to reveal about these plans soon.”

Player.me exists as a social community for video game and eSports enthusiasts. As such, it also functions as a discovery platform that content creators can use to help their channels grow, find like-minded gamers, and discover new games to enjoy. The platform sees more than 1 million activities monthly. Its user base, which already includes massively popular stars such as Moosnuckel and Caveman Films, is also expanding quickly. Just the previous month, it launched its own Android and iPhone apps.

Challonge is well-known as a tournament bracket tool, used by various organizations for eSports activities. It has been used by huge eSports events like the Red Bull Kumite 2016, the Capcom Pro Tour, and a host of Blizzard tourneys such as the WCS World League in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

By combining the strengths of Challonge’s tournament bracket system with Player.me’s discovery engine and community, SplitmediaLabs aims to make the job of managing, marketing, and running events more streamlined and efficient for tournament organizers. At the same time, the platform will allow every player who has aspirations of competing on a more professional level to boost their profile visibility courtesy of Player.me’s social features. — BM, GMA News
