XSplit developer announces overlay editor Strexm acquisition

SplitmediaLabs, the developer of internet broadcast and live streaming applications XSplit Gamecaster and XSplit Broadcaster, announced itsacquisition of Strexm, a livestream overlay management tool.

The Cloud-hosted Strexm.tv, which is a popular overlay editor among livestreamers of video games, currently boasts more than 150,000 users.

SplitmediaLabs acquired Strexm as part of its $10 million investment plan to develop a connected platform that offers gamers and content creators the tools necessary to create exemplary broadcasts, communities, tournaments, and events.

“My co-founder Jon Young and I are incredibly proud of what we’ve built with Strexm, and our market leadership came at the perfect time for alignment with the dominant broadcasting software, XSplit,” Strexm co-founder Gareth Reynolds said in a statement.

“The team behind XSplit have an incredibly convincing vision for what it will evolve into, particularly following the acquisitions of Player.me and Challonge, and the fit was obvious. With these resources behind us, Strexm will continue to build into the premier stream overlay editor for video creators and, together with XSplit, morph into the next-generation platform for broadcasters, players, and fans to connect around their favorite games.”

As mentioned by Reynolds, SplitmediaLabs acquired tournament management service Challonge and social discovery platform Player.me earlier this year.

Combined with Strexm and XSplit, SplitmediaLabs now has more than 8 million registered users. It also sees two million unique users and the creation of 90,000 tournaments per month.

SplitmediaLabs also acquired the stream overlay tool Stream Overlay Pro, which allows tournament organizers to develop professional stream overlays. Stream Overlay Pro’s creator, Erick Rodriguez, joined SplitmediaLabs to continue overseeing said tool’s development.

The future of Strexm

At present, Strexm is developing its overlay editor version 2.0, which it plans to officially reveal at TwitchCon 2016 to be held in San Diego, California.

Strexm 2.0 is meant to be a major improvement over its predecessor, which should prove a boon to content creators. Some new features give users the ability to create attractive overlay designs without having to resort to graphic design software such as Photoshop. The editor is also meant to be user-friendly, so that content creators can create designs and import them to OBS or XSplit with ease.

Furthermore, 150 customizable overlays will be added to the Strexm service. A number of these overlays are tailored around today’s most popular games, such as “League of Legends,” “Overwatch,” and “Doom.” Custom alerts and widgets will now also be allowed.

Overlay-designed timers, labels, goals, and polls can be easily added to broadcasts.

In addition to its Twitch support, Strexm will now provide support for YouTube Gaming and Hitbox. Strexm also plans to offer support for other services, such as Beam, soon. — BM, GMA News
