The popular notion is that gaming is a masculine hobby. This is, of course, demonstrably false; according to numerous studies, women enjoy video games just as much as men. And to drive that point home, actress Chloe Grace Moretz is launching a video series that seeks to challenge what many people commonly believe a “gamer” is.

“It’s another form of sexism to say girls don’t game,” Moretz explained to Mashable.  “It’s unfair. Gaming is such a fun experience, I really wanted to show that in the web series – that it’s not aggressive, it’s not masculine. It’s just fun.”

The series, which will be released on Monday on YouTube, consists of three parts.

To develop the series, Moretz entered a partnership with software/hardware behemoth Dell and its Alienware subsidiary.

In the episode sample above, Moretz is seen visiting Rooster Teeth’s Austin headquarters, where she plays “Rocket League” with some people from Achievement Hunter.

Achievement Hunter, which is a comedic channel focusing on video games, is part of the Rooster Teeth production company and YouTube network.

Moretz’s involvement in the project was all thanks to Dell.

“I think Dell is doing interesting stuff and using their gigantic platform to better the world and provide real social commentary,” Moretz said. “They reached out to me to see if I had anything that I felt should be talked about – and this was a big thing for me. Everyone always act they are so shocked to hear I’m a female gamer. They thought it was so crazy.”

The fact is that 48% of American women are gamers, as was revealed in 2015 by a Pew Research Center study.

The project seems a perfect fit for Moretz, who grew up playing video games with her youngest brother.

“Gaming was one of the ways we could even the playing field,” she said. “I could kick his butt.”

Moretz has also been taking a break from Hollywood to concentrate on social issues. For her, this video series is an opportunity to empower women gamers who are often made to feel like outsiders in a community that, for the longest time, has been perceived as male-only. — BM, GMA News
